Early Settlers of Patterson Creek including George PARKER.

1730:  "Thus it appears, by almost everyone's research, that the first earnest settlement in the area was circa 1730. There

may have been a few earlier forays to explore the area, for instance, Issac Vanmeter had been there prior to 1730 to view the

lands he applied for in his Grant." (The family tree of Noah HAMPTON as "John Hampton of Scotland & NJ" by Karl Hampton)

1744: The Treaty of Lancaster was a treaty concluded between the Six Nations (Iroquois) and the colonies of Virginia and

Maryland. Deliberations began at Lancaster, Pennsylvania on June 28, and ended on July 4, 1744.

1742: "Introduction. As settlers moved west from the Tidewater area of the Northern Neck and south from Maryland,

Pennsylvania and other northern colonies, new counties were formed in the Shenandoah Valley are of Norther Neck. The

time period covered by the grants abstracted herein includes formation and settlement of Frederick, Fairfax, Culpepper,

Loudoun, Fauquier, and Dunmore (changed in 1778 to Shenandoah) counties in Virginia and Hampshire and Berkeley

counties, now in West Virginia… Many land grants are given as 'of Frederick County,' for Frederick was the parent

county of many others, and grants were issues before the population was sufficient to form new counties." (page VII, Virginia

• BOOK: Hampshire County [West] Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists, 1800-1814, [S252], by Vicki Bidinger Horton,

Ancestry.com, GoogleBooks

• "Hampshire County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists consists of alphabetically arranged lists of all persons

who paid a property tax for every year between 1800 and 1814, except for 1808, when no tax was collected.

For each taxpayer Mrs. Horton has coded the number of white tithables in the household, the number of horses

owned, and the number of slaves, if any. On occasion, persons are identified with supporting information, such

as occupation. All the taxpayers are readily identified in the comprehensive index at the back of the volume.

Since this volume contains more than 20,000 entries, it is hard to imagine a better census approximation of

Hampshire County residents for this time period."

• The first number following the name indicates the number of white tithables. The second number indicates the

number of common horses, and the third number, when shown, indicates the number of slaves over the age of 12.

• Tithables @ Library of Virginia

"The noun "tithable" when it appears in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century records of Virginia refers

to a person who paid, or for whom someone else paid, one of the taxes that the General Assembly imposed

for the support of the civil government in the colony... Lists of tithables for a county or a household, then,

do not enumerate anyone under the age of sixteen or any adult white woman unless they were heads of

households. Relatively few tithables lists are extant."

• "I do not have an exact map but I know from looking at the mircofilmed original lists, that at times they noted

place names. Generally the place names in the Upper District included locations that are now in Mineral

County. The lower district generally included places that are in Hampshire County today." Diane Wolfordm,
