"Once the Native Americans were defeated at the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 settlers, once again, returned to the
county. By 1790, when the first national census was taken, Hampshire County had 7,346 residents, making it the second most
populous county in the present state of West Virginia at that time." (Wikipedia)
Abraham Johnson, Gent., was appointed to list the "tithables" in the Patterson Creek District. His list shows that there were
ninety-eight (89) heads of families and six hundred and twenty-two (622) inhabitants living in the Patterson Creek Valley at this
early date.
